Idaho's particular problem
Most states with legal betting run a statewide self-exclusion register. A gambler signs one form and every licensed operator in the state is obliged to refuse them. Idaho has no such register for sports betting, because it has no licensed sports betting to attach one to. The offshore operators covered on this site are not bound by any Idaho requirement at all.
That means the safeguards other states provide by law have to be assembled by hand here. The tools below are what is actually available.
Warning signs
- Betting more than you planned, more often than you planned, or chasing losses with larger stakes
- Money that was meant for rent, bills or food going into an account
- Borrowing to bet, or selling things to fund an account
- Hiding the extent of it from people close to you
- Feeling restless or irritable when you try to stop
- Betting to escape stress or low mood rather than for entertainment
One or two of these is a reason to set limits. Several together is a reason to call the helpline.
Tools you can use today
- Deposit limits. Most operators allow a daily, weekly or monthly cap in account settings. Set it when you open the account, while the decision is unemotional.
- Account self-exclusion. Individual operators offer cooling-off periods and permanent closure on request. It only binds the one operator, but it works.
- Blocking software. Gamban and BetBlocker both block gambling sites across your devices. BetBlocker is free. These work regardless of where an operator is licensed, which makes them more useful in Idaho than in most states.
- Bank blocks. Many US card issuers can block merchant category code 7995, which covers gambling transactions. Ask your bank.
- Remove stored payment details from the account and from your browser and phone.

For family and friends
You do not need the gambler's agreement to get help yourself. Gam-Anon exists for exactly this, and the national helpline takes calls from family members. Practical steps that help: stop covering the debts, protect joint accounts, and keep the conversation about the behaviour rather than the person.
